The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has called on people to prepare for more rain and possible flash floods.

In a severe weather warning issued just before 11 am today (17 January), heavy rainfall is predicted to hit parts of the southeast and Riverina regions of NSW, as well as the ACT.

“A very humid air mass drawn from the tropics is interacting with a cold front sweeping across the south of the state today, leading to areas of heavy rainfall with embedded thunderstorms,” a spokesperson said.

Six-hourly rainfall totals of 50 to 80 mm are likely and may result in flash flooding.

Albury, Tumbarumba, Selwyn, Adaminaby, Tumut and Khancoban are among the areas that may be affected.

The conditions are expected to ease from the west late on Wednesday.

A separate severe thunderstorm warning will be issued by the BoM if intense rainfall is detected within the warning area.

The State Emergency Service advises that during periods of heavy wet weather, we should:

  • Keep clear of creeks and storm drains
  • Do not drive, ride or walk through floodwater
  • Be aware run-off from rainfall could contain debris such as rocks, soil and trees
  • If you are trapped in floodwater, seek refuge in the highest place available and call triple zero
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, call your local SES unit on 132 500.

The BoM will issue the next severe weather warning by 5 pm today.
