Tyler Jones made his return to the Wagga Kangaroos rugby league club this season after originally turning out for the club in 2021.

The slightly built playmaker has been a solid performer for the Roos this season, covering several backline positions and on numerous occasions backing up after a full game for the Reserves.

Tyler is a cabinet-maker by trade, currently working as a carpenter. He’s been with his partner Abigail Williams for just over six months, and enjoys relaxing by watching movies, particularly murder mysteries and physiological thrillers – but you won’t catch him watching a horror film any time soon as it’s certainly not his favourite genre.

We put Tyler to the Region challenge.

Where are you from and where did you first start playing footy?
I’m from Bombala (a town in the Monaro region of south-eastern NSW) and that’s where I first starting playing footy when I was four years old.

Best footy memory?
My best footy memory would have to be winning the grand final for Bombala in 2018 after Bombala not winning a comp for 27 years.

Favourite player as a kid and why?
My favourite player was Benji Marshall (Wests Tigers and Kiwi legend – known for his elusive step and amazing skills with the ball in hand). I liked all his steps and dummies and tried to replicate him as best I could throughout my footy career.

Favourite childhood meal you can remember?
Dip eggs is what Mum called them, but I’ve heard them called soldiers and eggs. (A ”soldier” is a thin strip of toasted bread, reminiscent of a soldier on parade. The shape lends itself to dipping into a soft-boiled egg that has had the top removed.)

Favourite ground to play on and why?
I’d have to say McDonalds Park at Equex here in Wagga because it’s always in immaculate condition and is just a great field to play on – plus it’s our home ground for the Wagga Kangaroos.

Why should young kids take up rugby league?
Kids should definitely take up rugby league ’cause it’s a great way to make friends and have fun.

Do you have a celebrity lookalike?
I’d say Kalyn Ponga (Ponga is a professional rugby league footballer who captains and plays as a fullback for the Newcastle Knights in the NRL), but all my friends would just say anyone else with red hair.

What annoys you?
Not a lot annoys me, but I do hate waiting, so I’ll just say that.

Best advice you’ve ever been given?
I haven’t been given it yet.

On a car trip from the Region to Sydney, who would you NOT want in the passenger seat?
There’s not really anyone that comes to mind that I couldn’t stand that much to have next to me on a car trip like that.

Any person (dead or alive) you WOULD want in the passenger seat?
I’d love to have my nana – because I miss her.

Down to your last $20 – what would you spend it on?
A large Zinger box from KFC.
