Man, 20, refused bail over shopping centre toilet fire

A man will appear in court after a disabled toilet was set alight over the weekend in Albury.

Police said emergency services were called to a shopping centre in Griffith Road, Lavington, following reports a disabled toilet was on fire at about noon on Saturday (9 October).

When officers attached to Murray River Police District arrived at the scene, they found the toilet well alight.

The centre was evacuated, and Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported.

A crime scene was established and police began an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 20-year-old man at Albury Hospital on Saturday.

He was taken to Albury Police Station, where he was charged with damaging property by fire or explosion of more than $15,000.

The man appeared at Wagga Wagga Local Court on Sunday (8 October), where he was formally refused bail. He was ordered to appear before Albury Local Court on Monday (9 October).
