Man allegedly behind a string of fires in the region set to remain in custody

A 29-year-old Albury man charged with intentionally lighting fires in the Riverina has had his bail denied.

Michael Pithers faced Albury Local Court on 27 February, charged with four counts of intentionally causing fire and being reckless as to its spread, driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period, and custody of a knife in a public place.

Pithers did not apply for bail and Magistrate Sally McLaughlin formally refused it.

Police said Strike Force Zalgris was established to investigate the circumstances surrounding several suspicious fires in the Albury region in January.

Following investigations, Murray River Police District detectives stopped a white Toyota Corolla on Table Top Road, Thurgoona, at about 3:30 pm on Monday (26 February).

Police arrested Pithers at the scene, and he was taken to Albury Police Station.

Police allege Pithers was involved in four suspicious fires in Table Top and Thurgoona since January 2024.

Pithers will return to Albury Local Court on 12 March.
