Not-for-profit native garden ErinEarth will celebrate Wiradjuri culture with a NAIDOC theme for its upcoming seasonal open garden day.

ErinEarth media officer Charis Vera N said the community organisation’s open day was an excellent opportunity for people to connect to and learn about the Wiradjuri culture.

“ErinEarth is committed to paying respects and honouring the First Nations people,” Ms N said.

“When it comes to NAIDOC Week some people might feel a bit removed, not knowing if they are allowed to celebrate or how to celebrate.”

Ms N said the ErinEarth team had learned that so long as things were “done respectfully and with an honest intention to want to know more about a culture we don’t know enough about” people shouldn’t hesitate to participate.

The large urban woodland garden is set to host its seasonal open day on 30 July with an array of family activities, food and live music.

Wiradjuri elder Aunty Gail will hold a demonstration on how to make the humble “Johnny cake” bush scone and treat visitors to storytelling.

There will be a winter campfire, stew, damper, native plant sales, native scavenger hunt for children, sausage sizzle, fresh barista coffee and Dalbinya Dance Group performance.

“We also have people watching and running children’s activities, so parents don’t have to hawk-eye their little ones the whole time,” Ms N said.

“Parents can sit, have coffee and enjoy the music.”

Ms N encouraged people not to be deterred by the weather, as there would be shelter and a campfire to bundle up and keep warm.

Garden visitors will also have the opportunity to self-guide a Wiradjuri walk around the garden.

“People can walk around the garden and learn more about the native plants and their local role to First Nations people,” Ms N said.

She added that the purpose of the open day is for community building and to have people visit the garden instead of coming specifically for events.

“If people don’t want to attend the events, we encourage them to come and wander around the garden,” Ms N said.

“We enjoy the peace and tranquillity of ErinEarth, but the garden is about community building.”

ErinEarth Open Garden Day is a free event on 30 July from 9:30 am to 2 pm. For more information on the organisation visit the website.
