Nothing completes a winter day like a good cup of hot chocolate while wearing your favourite beanie.

So why not indulge in this popular beverage and pop a beanie on your scone while helping a valuable cause?

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Wagga’s Hot Chocolate and Beanie Day will be held from 19 to 25 June to raise 90 nights’ worth of accommodation for Riverina families with sick or injured kids.

RMHC Wagga fundraising and marketing manager Kiara Breust said the charity was calling on local schools, businesses and sporting clubs to be involved in the community fundraiser.

“Schools and sporting clubs can pick a date between the 19th and 25th to help RMHC Wagga fundraise,” Ms Breust said.

“The schools are putting on hot chocolate in their canteens and asking families to get the kids to wear a beanie on the day and bring a gold coin donation.”

Ms Breust said RMHC was asking people to register before the event and make donations to the cause if they wish to.

“This year, we’re aiming to raise 90 nights’ worth of accommodation for families to stay with us and each night, on average, costs about $160,” she said.

“Every little bit makes a huge difference.”

Last year the charity raised 60 nights’ worth of accommodation, which was about $12,000.

This is the third year RMCH Wagga is running its Hot Chocolate and Beanie Day.

Ms Breust said the fundraiser was always well received by the community.

“The community is quite engaged with the event and has plenty of fun with it,” she said.

“The feedback we get is that the kids love having hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day and get a chance to wear their beanies to school.

“We’ve had an incredible response and it is such a fun, easy way for us to fundraise locally.”

Ms Breust said the charity house had received 42 registrations for the fundraiser and hoped for more in the last couple of weeks before the event.
