Two face court over aggravated robbery and assault in the Riverina

A man has faced court, charged over an alleged aggravated robbery in the Riverina earlier this month, while a woman has been charged with the alleged assault of a police officer.

About 4:30 am on Sunday (2 October), three males allegedly forced their way into a supermarket on Sheridan Street, Gundagai, and stole cigarettes before leaving.

It will be further alleged a 35-year-old woman was assaulted and her vehicle stolen prior to the incident. She did not require further treatment.

Officers attached to Riverina Police District were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following extensive inquiries, officers attached to Wollongong Police District and South East Region Enforcement Squad (RES) attended a home on Heaslip Street, Coniston, at about 3 pm on Wednesday (19 October).

A 30-year-old woman was arrested at the scene, while a 23-year-old man was arrested more than a kilometre away on Ocean Street, Mount Saint Thomas, after a foot pursuit.

Both were taken to Wollongong Police Station where the man was charged with four offences:

  • Aggravated take/drive motor vehicle with person in/on it – in company
  • Aggravated break and enter commit serious indictable offence – serious indictable offence
  • Never licensed person drive vehicle on road – prior offence, and,
  • Detention application – arrest.

The woman was charged with assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm and a warrant was also executed for alleged drug offences.

Both were refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Thursday 20 October.

Inquiries continue to locate the two males involved in the alleged robbery.
