Turvey Park Girl Guides are set to host the Biggest Morning Tea this weekend to raise money for the Cancer Council.

The morning tea will be held on Sunday (5 May) from 10:30 to 11:45 am at the Turvey Park Girl Guides Centre.

Organisers Nicola Baaten, Mia Nicholls and Abby Byron are looking forward to hosting the event and raising funds for the Cancer Council.

The Girl Guides said they had organised the event over the past month.

“I’ve been emailing businesses asking for donations,” Nicola said.

“We’ve got a hamper from Junee Licorice Chocolate Factory, a $50 gift voucher from Spotlight, and I’ll pick up donations from Bunnings. I’m also waiting for replies from other businesses.”

The girls hope to raise several hundred dollars, having raised $237 so far.

Nicola came across the idea of hosting the Biggest Morning Tea and decided to ask Mia and Abbey to help with the organising.

“All three of us are working on our BP Award, which is the highest peak achievement award for girls our age – 10- to 13-year-olds,” Nicola said.

All three organisers said it was vital to raise funds for the Cancer Council, and for children to learn about sun safety and cancer.

“It’s important for kids to learn how be safe in the sun, and if they don’t, they could get cancer,” Mia said.

“One in three Australians are affected by cancer,” Nicola said.

“Cancer can hurt and damage people … we don’t want that to happen and we want to help with it,” Abby said.

Mia, Nicola, and Abby shared their reasons for joining Turvey Park Girl Guides and how it had helped them grow.

“I joined three years ago because I thought it would be great to learn new skills,” Mia said. “We have grown much closer, met up after school and planned things.”

“Even though my mum is the Guides leader, she said it was still my free choice [to join],” Nicola said. “I started in Kindergarten and learnt much more about leadership skills and what’s happening in the world and our community.”

“I decided to join because I was told it was great. I needed it for my mental health and I’ve been here for two years,” Abby said.

“We’ve built stronger relationships with each other and other Girl Guides around us.”

Nicola has hopes for a larger group.

“It used to be a lot bigger. There used to be a junior and a senior Guide here, but the numbers have dropped. I hope to see it back up again,” she said.

The Biggest Morning Tea will be held on Sunday (5 May) from 10:30 to 11:45 am at the Turvey Park Girl Guides Hall at 23 Sunshine Avenue, Turvey Park.

If you or your daughter want to join the Turvey Park Girl Guides, you can sign up for the Biggest Morning Tea or message them via their Facebook page.
