Stranger allegedly punched, stomped and kneed 86-year-old Griffith man in the face

A man who allegedly kneed an elderly stranger in the face will front Griffith Local Court today charged over the serious assault.

Police will allege an 86-year-old man was walking along Kooyoo Street, Griffith, when he was approached and allegedly punched in the face by the man just after 4:15 pm yesterday, Tuesday 6 September.

The younger man then allegedly grabbed the elderly man’s head in both hands before kneeing him in the face, causing the older man to fall backwards and hit his head on the concrete.

It will be further alleged the man then stomped on the elderly man’s face before fleeing.

A member of the public went to the man’s aid and emergency services were contacted.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him at the scene for facial and head injuries before he was taken to Griffith Base Hospital. He has since been released.

Officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District began investigating the assault and their inquiries led them to a nearby hotel. Police arrested the 26-year-old man at the hotel on Banna Avenue, Griffith, at about 5:30 pm that day.

He was taken to Griffith Police Station where he was charged with one count each of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and reckless grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear in Griffith Local Court on Wednesday (7 September 2022).
