A body has been located in the Snowy Mountains during a search for a 23-year-old man who went back country skiing last weekend and failed to return.

The man, who grew up in Griffith, was reported missing on Saturday 3 September, after his family contacted police saying it was unlike him not to contact family or friends for such a long period of time.

On Sunday, a large-scale coordinated aerial and ground search of remote parts of the Kosciuszko National Park began, involving specialist police from the Alpine Operations Unit, PolAir, the State Emergency Service, and National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Police said officers aboard the PolAir helicopter spotted a person in a remote area of Watsons Crags on Monday (5 September) afternoon, however hazardous weather conditions and steep terrain meant it was unable to land.

The operation was suspended for the day, resuming again yesterday with specialist police officers who were trained in alpine rescue.

The officers were then lowered to the ground, where they discovered the body of a man.

The body has now been retrieved and taken to Canberra for post mortem examination. While it is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be the body of the missing 23-year-old skier.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The family is understandably devastated by the news and asking for privacy at this time.
