Riverina residents kicked off their morning with severe thunderstorms and a number of lightning strikes.

Most of the thunderstorm activity occurred in the central and southern parts of the Riverina.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) meteorologist Sally Scully said the Riverina had received between 20 and 30 millimetres of rain which had fallen “in a really short period of time”.

“Throughout the day, there may be some more storms that pass over, but they will gradually start to clear and contract to the east as the trough moves eastward, away from the area,” Ms Scully said.

“The humid conditions, showers and thunderstorms will clear today as the trough clears away.

“We can expect some showers in the very far south of the Riverina but not thunderstorms, and those conditions will continue into the weekend,” she said.

Ms Scully said showers and possible storms could occur across the Riverina with the passage of a cold front which will bring in cooler conditions from next Monday.

Despite the rain forecast, the season is expected to be drier and warmer than average.
