Man arrested after alleged break, enter, assault and wild drive through Riverina streets

A man has been charged following an alleged aggravated break and enter and the assault of a man at a Riverina home on the weekend.

Sometime between 10 am and 12 pm on Saturday (12 November), police were told a man visited a unit on Herbert Street, Tumut, but was refused entry.

The man then allegedly became aggressive and forced his way into the home and assaulted the 21-year-old man who lived there, before fleeing.

The resident sustained cuts and bruises and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene.

Officers attached to Riverina Police District were notified and commenced an investigation.

About 8.40 pm that day, police received multiple reports of a blue Holden Commodore allegedly being driven dangerously through the Tumut CBD, before crashing into several parked vehicles.

The 35-year-old driver attempted to flee but was arrested by police after a short foot pursuit and taken to the Wagga Base Hospital for treatment.

He has since been released and was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station where he was charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence – use violence – serious indictable offence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and destroy or damage property.

He was refused bail to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court.
