Join in the conversation with renowned filmmakers at the Gallery

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is inviting all aspiring filmmakers, cinephiles and the greater community to a weekend of film and conversation with award-winning Australian industry leaders.

The Gallery is set to host a weekend of film-focused forums, a new exhibition launch, renowned artists and film-makers Zanny Begg and Helen Grace in conversation and professional development opportunities for budding filmmakers.

Begg’s exhibition These Stories will be Different will launch on Saturday 30 July featuring five of the filmmaker’s video works including City of Ladies (2017), The Beehive (2018) and Stories of Kannagi (2019).

Begg’s exhibition explores the connections between love, loss and language in Australia’s migrant communities, probes the unsolved murder of a high-profile King’s Cross anti-gentrification campaigner Juanita Nielsen and reimagines a medieval feminist utopia.

“I am not sure if art alone can create a different world,” Ms Begg said.

“However, it can help us see how one could come into existence and the ways in which we can contribute to this process.”

Artist and filmmaker Helen Grace is set to showcase her moving image works in Serious Undertakings – Weekend Film Forum, which includes film, video and animated photography works made over the past four decades.

The artist will introduce these short films in two open screenings. Ten local writers and creatives will provide their creative responses, which promise to surprise, delight and challenge audiences on the content.

Grace is currently undertaking a residency at the Gallery with curator and writer Julie Ewington and mentoring local aspiring artists.

On Sunday 31 July, aspiring filmmakers of the region will get the opportunity to meet Zanny Begg for a professional development session and receive feedback.
