Across the Riverina, there is heaps to get excited about in the coming week. With everything from art shows to live music, special film screenings, sport and stand-up, there’s something for you in the days ahead.

Mei Zhao: Remapping Erased Landscapes

When: 9 to 15 May, 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday to Saturday; 10 am to 2 pm, Sunday
Where: Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and National Art Glass Gallery, Civic Centre, Corner of Baylis and Morrow streets

Using painting, drawing, textiles and installation art, multidisciplinary artist Mei Zhao explores the history of Chinese immigration in the region.

Informed by visits all across the region, Mei reimagines and centralises the stories of a migrant group, that are often lost to history, through abstract works, hoping to tell the untold and make physical the difficult-to-grasp historiography of the country she lives in.

Mosaic Classes at the Glenfield Community Centre

Unlock your inner artist and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Turkish mosaic lamps, one of the most recognisable symbols of Turkish culture. At this class, experienced instructors will help you create your very own colourful, intricate Turkish lamp, letting both novice artists and practised hands make something truly unique. Drawing on the traditional art form and blending it with their own styles, each creator makes something one-of-a-kind.

50 Years / 50 Treasures – Celebration of a half century of the Wagga Art Gallery

When: 10 May, 2 to 4 pm
Where: Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Baylis Street

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery celebrates 50 years of providing a platform for art in the Riverina with a special gallery-wide event showcasing the highlights from half a century of operation.

The 50 years/50 treasures exhibition brings to the fore 50 objects and artworks from the gallery’s collections across a broad artistic range of glass, painting, print, ceramic, textile art and sculpture. There will also be a talk from Dr Denis O’Connor, a visual artist with more than two decades of experience in exploring light, tone, shape and form with charcoal.

Wheelchair AFL lets everyone, no matter their ability, take part in one of Australia’s favourite pastimes – sport. Aimed at inclusivity, fun and fitness, Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT hopes to bring the joy of the game to as many people as possible.

Learn new skills, meet new people and get active. All ages and levels of experience are welcome and equipment is provided.

SEEN The Film – Viewing and Talk with Joe Williams

This groundbreaking documentary explores the power of healing for parents and how a parent’s mental health journey can positively impact the development of their children. The film’s intention was to resonate with parents and audiences and to spur them into self-reflection. By presenting an unfiltered, authentic narrative of parenting, the film addresses the traumas that parents may suffer that impact their children negatively.

This innovative film will be followed by a talk and Q&A with Joe Williams, a former NRL player and boxer turned mental health advocate.

Brass and Beyond – Free Concert

Where: St. John’s Anglican Church, 6-12 Church Street, Wagga Wagga

Brass and Beyond presents a fascinating selection of musical styles in this free lunchtime concert, all about music written and arranged for a brass quartet. Presented with a talented band of local professional musicians, this performance brings great music to listeners for free, all within the beautiful atmosphere of Wagga Wagga’s St. John’s Anglican Church.
