The Wagga Wagga Picnic Races returns to the Murrumbidgee Turf Club for 2023 on 30 September, this time to raise funds for children’s charity Country Hope.

This year’s incarnation of the popular event will bring fashion, live performances and of course racing, while also highlighting the struggles and difficulties that children with cancer and medical conditions face.

Country Hope committee member and Wagga Motors sales manager Thomas Buggy explained that the money raised through ticket sales and races throughout the day will be used to allow children with cancer to attend a camp retreat.

“It will be a nice opportunity for the kids who are affected to go on a nice little camp for a few days,” he said.

“We want to be able to treat them and be able to take their minds off what can be a very difficult time.”

The Picnic Races has been one of the longest supporters of Country Hope in its 20-year existence and continues to be a proud sponsor of the charity.

“The Murrumbidgee Turf Club have been very supportive throughout the process of getting the race day ready to go,” Mr Buggy said.

“We are in constant conversations to make sure we have things set up and ready to go, they’re really assisting us to make sure that the best event possible is the one that is put on.”

Mr Buggy said the ideal outcome of the day is to have as many people turn up to the event as possible, dressed up in their best outfits, enjoying a day out while also reading as much money as possible.

“The event actually falls on the AFL Grand Final day as well,” he explained.

“We’ve actually organised a large super screen to be set up out on the course, the game will be playing so people can enjoy the game, enjoy the races and enjoy everything going on, on the day.”

Mr Buggy said there are still a couple of marquees still available for people to purchase before the long weekend with opportunities for major sponsors to still jump on board.

“Tickets are on sale at the moment and can be purchased online, it is going to be a fantastic and colourful event for a wonderful cause that I’m sure a lot of people will remember fondly for a long time.”
