Things to do in the Riverina this week (13 – 19 February)

Across the Riverina there are many exciting events to look forward to, with sporting events, town shows, tribute acts, stand-up comedy, Valentine’s Day celebrations and much more.

Cootamundra’s Bourke Street will turn into a sunny beach scene with 900 tonnes of sand dumped on the street to stage some fierce volleyball competition. But more than just sport, the event will feature plenty of food stalls, live entertainment and community fun.

Riverina residents looking to celebrate the day of love are spoilt for choice, with stargazing events at the observatory, ABBA tribute acts to sing along to and even LEGO workshops.

That’s just a taste of some of the events to get involved with this week in the Riverina.

Coota Beach Volleyball

When: 13 to 15 February, 8 am to 6 pm
Where: 32 Bourke Street, Cootamundra
Cost: Spectating is free.

A full weekend of sand, sport and fun awaits in Cootamundra’s Bourke Street, as 900 tonnes of sand transforms the town into a beachside paradise with 10 volleyball courts. Bringing together players of all skills for thrilling matches, there will be a whole lot of excitement as teams dive and jump to strike the ball over the net. All teams have been filled but there’s still a lot to enjoy as a spectator, with great food on offer, live entertainment and community spirit.

The nearest beach may be 390 km away but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a day at the beach, right at home in Cootamundra.

The Gundagai Show is bringing excitement to town across two days of agricultural events, entertainment, displays and festivities.

This year’s program is absolutely jam-packed, with cattle, horse, sheep and poultry exhibits, along with pavilion displays featuring birds, yard dogs and sheepdog trials.

There will also be an animal nursey, reptile park, magician, caricatures, food and market stalls, vintage cars on display, sideshow alley and of course, plenty of show bags.

Don’t miss out on Gundagai’s massive yearly celebration of community talent and country life.

Riverina Comedy Club presents Danielle Walker

Danielle Walker is a long way from home. Originally a native of the rainforests of Far North Queensland, she’s come down to the dry south to share side-splitting stories of going from the bush to the city.

Far more comfortable with swimming in creeks and helping her grandad get rid of feral pigs, Walker has managed to adapt to the world of comedy, with comedy, writing, comedy writing and acting among her many talents. Her credits include Taskmaster, Gold Diggers and Thank God You’re Here, and she has won comedy awards at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Love Letters: Valentine LEGO Workshop

Unique State Art Space is doing Valentine’s Day differently this year, with a special LEGO workshop to celebrate the day of love.

Attendees will build LEGO Love Letters with their partner, creating a fun physical representation of their love, among other LEGO enthusiasts. Then Valentine’s pairs will get to take home their new decor piece, which stands on a blue base and spells “L-O-V-E”. There is significant room for customisation and personal touches, so get creative.

The Rock Regional Observatory is hosting a night of astronomical adventure this Saturday.

Open to all ages, Saturday SkyWatch invites you and your family to explore the night sky through the observatory’s telescopes, as well as learn about stars, planets and the constellations.

If you’re curious about the stars and you want to take advantage of the dark skies available in the country, this is your chance.

To celebrate the release of his sixth album, musician, Golden Guitar winner and horseman Tom Curtain is performing around the country.

More than just a musical performance, this tour includes the Katherine Outback Experience Show with real horse training and demonstrations of working dogs, as well as hands-on activities for kids.

After this demonstration, there will be two hours of live music from Tom Curtain, Laura Frank and Chris Matthews.
