Dominating this week’s list of things to do in the Riverina are Australia Day and Survival Day events, kicking off with each of the Riverina’s councils hosting their own citizen ceremonies and breakfasts on Sunday morning.

Murundhu Aboriginal Concert and Day of Mourning

Mawang Gayway Community Group is hosting two events over the weekend.
Murundhu: I Live, I Breathe, is two events celebrating Wiradyuri culture and showcasing the incredible talents of local and national First Nations artists.
On Saturday a concert will be held at The Riverside Stage featuring rap artist Philly and Beacho2700, together with country music crooners Lawrence Lollipop Barlow and Dookie Thorne.
On Sunday go behind closed doors at the Riverina Playhouse to contemplate Australia Day with yarning, films, documentaries, and animations.

Demonstration Gardens – Vegetable Swap and Buy

Where: Corner Shaw and Albury streets, Wagga
Cost: Free entry.
Come to the Demonstration Gardens, bring fruit or vegetables to swap, or purchase fresh vegetables from the community garden. All proceeds go to the community gardens. Held every Saturday morning, weather permitting, it is a great way to support the local community.

Australia Day Celebrations

Councils around the Riverina will be hosting breakfast, lunch, or family events to celebrate Australia Day.
Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Albury, Leeton, Gundagai, Cootamundra, Temora, and Narrandera will all be hosting their own citizen ceremonies, allowing the community to greet and congratulate the country’s newest citizens.

Survival Day
When: Sunday 26 January, 11 am to 3 pm
Where: Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre
Cost: Free.
This free family event is a chance to respect, reflect on, and celebrate our local Aboriginal culture. Take part in a range of activities and attractions, including storytelling, traditional dancers, language, arts and crafts, an elders tent, singing performances, a DJ, face painting, a podcast speaking workshop by One Mob radio, stalls, live radio broadcasts, a free barbecue, a dance comp, and much more.

Australia Day Mighty Murrumbidgee River Duck Race
When: Sunday 26 January, 12:30 to 5 pm
Where: Wagga Wagga Beach
Cost: $6.61 and can be purchased via eventbrite.
Join in the Australia Day celebrations at Wagga Wagga Beach for the 2025 Mighty Murrumbidgee Duck Race. Enjoy live music, food, drinks, kids’ amusements and of course the spectacular duck races down the Murrumbidgee River. Make sure to book a duck.

The youth outdoor event Kooringal Kicks and Tricks skate competition will be at Henwood Park. There will be a free barbecue, lawn games, free haircuts, school giveaways, weaving workshops, sports and an outdoor movie starting at 7 pm.
The competition also coincides with Wagga Wagga City Council’s free youth skater workshop.
