Teen arrested in Wagga over two house fires in the Riverina

A teenager was arrested and charged in Wagga over the weekend following an investigation into a suspicious fire in the Riverina.

Police said emergency services were called to a home in Edwardes Street, Deniliquin, after reports of a fire about 2:45 am on 6 July.

Murray River Police District officers arrived and found a man inside the home.

The 66-year-old was removed from the premises and treated by NSW Ambulance officers for smoke inhalation.

The fire spread to the adjacent home, where a woman was inside. She was treated by ambulance officers for minor burns to her face, arms and neck. She was taken to Deniliquin Hospital as a precaution.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze but the two homes were destroyed.

A crime scene was established and an investigation into the cause of the fire began under Strike Force Uncle.

Following extensive inquiries, officers arrested a 17-year-old boy in Glenfield Park about 9:50 pm on Saturday (7 September).

He was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station, where he was charged with destroying/damaging property with intent to endanger life and two counts of damaging property by fire/explosion for more than $15,000.

The teen was refused bail to appear before a children’s court on Sunday (8 September), when he was formally refused bail to reappear at a children’s court on Monday (9 September).

Police are continuing their inquiries to locate two other males, who ran from the scene.
