Six Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews have worked hard to contain a fire raging in the main street of The Rock on Monday (29 September).
It’s understood that a fire started in a garage and spread to an adjoining real estate agency and a third building in Urana Street.
“The fire has spread from one structure into two adjoining structures. The buildings are relatively old,” RFS operational officer Bradley Stewart said.
“At the moment, the crews have achieved control of the fire, but there is a significant volume of what we call salvage and overhaul to occur.
“Wearing breathing apparatus, crews will go into the structure if it’s safe to do so. They’ll look for any hotspots and extinguish those. Where there is opportunity to save valuable items that are undamaged, they’ll seek to achieve that.”
RFS crews from The Rock, Forrest Hill, Uranquinty, Glenfield, Yarragundry and Lake Albert are all on the scene supporting the operation.
Firies who have been working hard for several hours won’t expect to have a rest anytime soon.
“This will be a protracted operation that will occur well into tonight and possibly into tomorrow,” Mr Stewart said.
Police are also on the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but investigations are underway.
Fire and Rescue NSW is supporting RFS crews with breathing apparatus and rehab.
“The fire has generated significant smoke across the wider area,” Mr Stewart said.
”Those people living in close proximity to The Rock are advised to keep their windows closed and limit outside exposure to the smoke and seek medical help if required.”
It’s understood that the buildings were occupied earlier today, but there are no reports of any injuries.
