Wastewater experts are on the ground at Charlotte’s Pass today (20 May) after a fire broke out at the resort’s sewage treatment plant (STP).

Four fire trucks and 16 firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW crews responded to reports of the blaze at about 6:30 on Friday (17 May) morning at the two-level plant, which is located near Mount Kosciuszko’s peak.

F&R NSW Inspector Phil Eberle said the first truck arrived within 15 minutes.

“The fire was fuelled by diesel and different building products,” he said.

“It took firies approximately two hours to bring it into full control and containment.”

A relay had to be established to pump water to the isolated location.

Insp Eberle said no injuries were reported and there was “very little” spread into the surrounding environment.

However the structure suffered significant damage, impacting the section of the building which houses the plant’s main controls, pumps and plant automation.

Charlotte’s Pass Village has been closed to the public and no access is available as a result of the blaze.

Resort chairman Kevin Blyton said along with the wastewater experts, a meeting with Department of Planning officers has been scheduled for Tuesday (21 May).

“With the STP offline, the village is unable to process any wastewater from taps, showers or toilets,” he said.

Further updates are expected later this week.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious but F&R NSW is investigating the cause.
