Sawn-off and drugs found during police raid over alleged jewellery store heist

A man has been charged over an alleged break-in at a jewellery store in the state’s Murrumbidgee region last month.

At about 4:15 am on Monday 5 December 2022, a jewellery store on Pine Avenue, Leeton, was allegedly broken into, with several jewellery items stolen.

Officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, police from the Murrumbidgee Proactive Crime Team and Leeton Police executed a search warrant at a home on Golf Drive, Leeton, at about 7:30 am today (27 January).

During a search, police located and seized cannabis, cannabis seeds, a shortened .22 calibre rifle and ammunition, as well as items consistent with the alleged break-in.

A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Leeton Police Station where he was charged with:

  • Possessing a prohibited drug
  • Cultivate a prohibited plant
  • Goods in custody suspected of being stolen
  • Possessing a prohibited firearm
  • Possessing a restricted substance (steroids).

He was refused bail to appear in Griffith Bail Court tomorrow (28 January).
