Riverina Highway Patrol seizes 56,000 cigarettes and 25 kg of tobacco leaves in roadside testing

A man is set to face court following the seizure of 56,000 cigarettes and more than 25 kilograms of tobacco leaves over the weekend.

Police said Riverina Highway Patrol officers had stopped a Hyundai iLoad van for roadside testing during their patrol about 12:40 pm on Saturday (24 June).

The officers spoke to the 42-year-old male driver, who was subject to a drug and alcohol test, which allegedly returned a positive reading for cocaine.

Police searched the vehicle, where they found and seized more than 56,000 cigarettes and over 25 kg of what is believed to be tobacco leaves.

The man was arrested and taken to Cootamundra Police Station for secondary testing. He was charged with dealing with property proceeds of crime – less than $100,000.

He was given conditional bail to appear before Cootamundra Local Court on Monday, 21 August.
