Finding medical treatment or pharmaceuticals can be a challenge over the Christmas period as hours vary and many chemists close their doors on public holidays.
Fortunately, there are some options in Wagga over the next few weeks for both GP support and pharmacies.
Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network has confirmed that the Wagga Wagga GP After Hours Service (WGPAHS) for medical treatment outside business hours will continue over the holiday period.
CEO Melissa Neal said it was a valuable resource for people who needed urgent care when their regular GP was closed.
“The Wagga GP After Hours Service is staffed by committed local GPs who provide high-quality patient care when their regular surgery is closed,” she said.
“During the holiday period, it’s important people are aware if they are unwell they should continue to see a medical professional for treatment, even outside of normal business hours or on public holidays.”
If the situation is life-threatening, then, of course, you should call triple zero, but Associate Professor Ayman Shenouda from the Glenrock Country Practice said the service helped reduce the pressure on the Base Hospital emergency department.
“The Wagga GP After Hours Service offers non-life-threatening, urgent medical treatment for patients who cannot wait to see their regular GP during periods when general practices are closed or unavailable,” he said.
“Those patients who cannot manage their conditions at home or who are concerned about symptoms should not hesitate to make an appointment.”

In terms of pharmacists, Cincotta Discount Chemist on Baylis Street in the CBD, and South City Pharmacy in the South City Shopping Centre in Glenfield Park, are the most likely to be open.
Cincotta Discount Chemist is open every day of the holidays except Christmas Day.
South City Pharmacy is open every day of the holidays except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
