Man refused bail in Griffith Local Court over alleged assault of two men in Yanco

30-year-old Nowra man Jack Schmetzer has fronted Griffith Local Court over the alleged assault of two men in the northern Riverina.

Officers from Murrumbidgee Police District were called to a residence on Cudgel Street in Yanco following reports two men had been assaulted on 22 April.

Police said they found a 36-year-old man and a 55-year-old man with several injuries to their heads, arms and legs.

The two men were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Griffith Hospital, but the 36-year-old was later taken to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

Police then began an investigation into the incident, and following extensive inquiries, Schmetzer was arrested on 23 April in Leeton and taken to Leeton Police Station.

He was charged with reckless wounding, wounding a person with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, stalk/intimidate intending to cause fear of physical harm and destroying or damaging property.

He did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused by Magistrate Trevor Khan, who set his next court appearance for 6 July.
