A 19-year-old learner driver is set to face court after he was allegedly caught speeding under the influence while unaccompanied.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Command allege Narrandera Highway Patrol officers were conducting patrols in Leeton when they detected a white Nissan Pulsar travelling at 79 km/h in a 50 km/h signposted area at about 11:05 pm on 8 November.
Police activated their warning devices but the driver allegedly initially failed to stop.
“The vehicle eventually stopped, out of all places, in front of Leeton Police Station,” said a Traffic and Highway Patrol Command spokesperson. “The driver produced a current learner’s licence.”
The spokespesron alleged that at the time the driver was not being supervised by a fully licensed Australian driver and he failed to display L plates on his vehicle.
“The driver’s night went from bad to worse, when a roadside breath test was conducted and returned a positive result,” the spokesperson alleged.
The Leeton driver was later subjected to a breath analysis at Leeton Police Station, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.129. The legal limit for a learner driver is zero (0.000).
The driver was issued a field court attendance notice for the offence of mid-range PCA, along with infringement notices for being an unaccompanied learner driver ($1045), failing to display L plates ($320, 2 demerits), not obeying the direction of police ($410, 3 demerits), and exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h ($574, 4 demerits).
His licence was also suspended.
