A 39-year-old man has been charged after he was allegedly caught speeding at nearly four times the legal blood alcohol limit.

Police said officers attached to Wagga Wagga Highway Patrol were patrolling on Lake Albert Road, Kooringal, around 8:30 pm on 7 February, when they allegedly detected a Ford Territory four-wheel drive driving at 80 km/h in a 60 km/h speed zone.

The officers stopped the vehicle on Fay Avenue and spoke to the male driver, who allegedly smelt strongly of alcohol and told the police he had only had one or two beers and that he was on his way to the pub. A roadside breath test returned an alleged alcohol reading of 0.203 – nearly four times the legal blood alcohol limit.

The driver was arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station, where he allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.189.

He was issued a court attendance notice for driving with a high range prescribed concentration of alcohol and was given a penalty notice for speeding.

He was also issued with a suspension notice to withdraw his driving privileges in NSW until his court appearance at Wagga Wagga Local Court.
