An inferno has destroyed a Mobil petrol station off the Hume Highway near Gundagai.
Police said emergency services were called to a service station at Coolac following reports of a fire about 10 pm on Tuesday (5 September).
More than 30 firefighters from NSW RFS and Fire and Rescue from across the Riverina were at the scene to contain the blaze before it reached the fuel bowsers.
NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and Essential Energy also attended while Cootamundra Gundagai Regional Council provided bulk water.
“We had crews on the scene fairly quickly and they worked hard for a few hours to knock down the initial blaze and have remained on the scene overnight to deal with any flare-ups,” said NSW RFS South West Slopes Zone operational officer Krystaal Hinds.
“They will remain on scene with hotspots left, but we anticipate they will be leaving at some stage today.”
“At the moment we’re not aware of it being a suspicious fire and there will be a thorough investigation,” she said.
Despite the efforts of the firefighters, the property was extensively damaged, however there were no reports of injuries.
Ms Hinds said the firefighters had done an excellent job to contain the inferno.
Riverina Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
Ms Hinds reminded motorists to be aware of any emergency services vehicles operating in the area.
As investigations continue, anyone with dashcam footage or information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
