A day of camaraderie, community spirit, and teamwork has wrapped up successfully in Wagga Wagga following the biennial firefighter showdown.

Over three days, 26 teams from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) competed in the 2024 State Firefighter Championship, showcasing their skills in a hard-fought competition and focused development activities.

FRNSW Deputy Commissioner Paul McGuigan said the atmosphere in Wagga Wagga was incredible.

“The firefighter championships bring out the best in our people, with teamwork and community spirit in abundance throughout the entire event,” Deputy Commissioner McGuiggan said.

“We can’t thank the communities of Wagga Wagga and Turvey Park enough for their hospitality, we’ve felt so welcome.

“I send my congratulations to the winners from Echuca CFA, and my thanks to all of the other teams who competed.

“I’m confident that each competitor will take home additional knowledge and skills that will in turn serve their local communities.”

The championships, for the first time, had two all-female teams, from Culcairn and Ulladulla.

The championships returned to the birthplace of the first ‘State Demos’ in 1932. Wagga also hosted the championships in 1962.

Competitors put their stamina, attention to detail and cooperation to the test with events such as ‘rescue’, ‘booster valve’, ‘ladder’ and ‘high-rise bag’.

Victorian visitors, Echuca Country Fire Authority (CFA) took out the top spot after an exhilarating display of teamwork and skill, inching ahead of FRNSW’s Wyong and Kootingal Rural Fire Service (RFS) which came in second and third place respectively.
