Dominating this week’s list of things to do in the Riverina are Australia Day and Survival Day events, kicking off with each of the Riverina’s councils hosting their own citizen ceremonies and breakfasts on Sunday morning.

For a bit of family fun, why not enter the Rubber Duck Race on Sunday at Wagga Wagga Beach?

You can trade in your homegrown fruits and vegetables at the Demonstration Gardens or check out the Riverina Producers’ Market for all your local favourites.

Try your hand at pottery at the North Shore Studios.

Head to Junee and enjoy the last week of school holidays by making chocolate freckles at Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory.

There are three new releases at Forum 6 Cinemas.

An activity that will always be a hit with the kids is chocolate freckle making at Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory. Head to Junee these holidays for a day of chocolate making and eating.

Murundhu Aboriginal Concert and Day of Mourning

When: Saturday 25 January, 6 pm to 9 pm, Sunday 26 January 10 am 5 pm
Where: Riverside Stage on Saturday and CSU Riverina Playhouse on Sunday
Cost: Free.

Mawang Gayway Community Group is hosting two events over the weekend.
Murundhu: I Live, I Breathe, is two events celebrating Wiradyuri culture and showcasing the incredible talents of local and national First Nations artists.

On Saturday a concert will be held at The Riverside Stage featuring rap artist Philly and Beacho2700, together with country music crooners Lawrence Lollipop Barlow and Dookie Thorne.

On Sunday go behind closed doors at the Riverina Playhouse to contemplate Australia Day with yarning, films, documentaries, and animations.

Cost: Tickets are $95 and can be purchased via North Shore Studios.

Get your friends together and have a pottery and pints night session at the North Shore Studios.

Demonstration Gardens is held every Sunday.

Demonstration Gardens – Vegetable Swap and Buy

When: Saturday 26 January, 9 am – noon
Where: Corner Shaw and Albury streets, Wagga
Cost: Free entry.

Come to the Demonstration Gardens, bring fruit or vegetables to swap, or purchase fresh vegetables from the community garden. All proceeds go to the community gardens. Held every Saturday morning, weather permitting, it is a great way to support the local community.

Australia Day Celebrations

When: Sunday 26 January from 7 am
Where: Local government areas around the Riverina
Cost: Free.

Councils around the Riverina will be hosting breakfast, lunch, or family events to celebrate Australia Day.

Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Albury, Leeton, Gundagai, Cootamundra, Temora, and Narrandera will all be hosting their own citizen ceremonies, allowing the community to greet and congratulate the country’s newest citizens.

When: Sunday 26 January, 11 am to 3 pm
Where: Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre
Cost: Free.

This free family event is a chance to respect, reflect on, and celebrate our local Aboriginal culture. Take part in a range of activities and attractions, including storytelling, traditional dancers, language, arts and crafts, an elders tent, singing performances, a DJ, face painting, a podcast speaking workshop by One Mob radio, stalls, live radio broadcasts, a free barbecue, a dance comp, and much more.

Australia Day Mighty Murrumbidgee River Duck Race

When: Sunday 26 January, 12:30 to 5 pm
Where: Wagga Wagga Beach
Cost: $6.61 and can be purchased via eventbrite.

Join in the Australia Day celebrations at Wagga Wagga Beach for the 2025 Mighty Murrumbidgee Duck Race. Enjoy live music, food, drinks, kids’ amusements and of course the spectacular duck races down the Murrumbidgee River. Make sure to book a duck.

Kooringal Kicks and Tricks

Cost: Free. Book for free workshops.

The youth outdoor event Kooringal Kicks and Tricks skate competition will be at Henwood Park. There will be a free barbecue, lawn games, free haircuts, school giveaways, weaving workshops, sports and an outdoor movie starting at 7 pm.

The competition also coincides with Wagga Wagga City Council’s free youth skater workshop.

Riverina Producers’ Market

The Riverina Producers’ Market is bustling every Thursday at the Wagga Showground, featuring the Riverina’s local producers and the best of what they have to offer – eggs, chocolates, fruits, veggies and more.
