Police allege pursuit reached 180 km/h on Hume Highway

Police have charged two men following an alleged high-speed pursuit on the Hume Highway.

Police said Riverina Police District officers approached a vehicle on the Hume Highway, Tarcutta and attempted to stop it, but the vehicle allegedly left the scene and was allegedly seen crossing onto the incorrect side of the roadway at about 4:30 pm on Thursday (18 July).

Following inquiries, officers located the vehicle at Mates Gully Road, Tarcutta, a short time later and initiated a pursuit. Police allege that during the pursuit the vehicle reached speeds of up to 180 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. ‘Stop sticks’ were utilised, and the vehicle came to a stop.

Officers arrested the 29-year-old male driver and his 25-year-old male passenger, and during a search of the vehicle, they allegedly located a substance believed to be methylamphetamine.

Both men were taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station, where the passenger was charged with specially aggravated break, enter and steal and two counts of assault causing bodily harm in company.

The driver was charged with not obeying police direction, police pursuit, supplying prohibited drugs, as well as breach of bail, and an outstanding arrest warrant was executed for alleged drug and firearm offences.

Both men were refused bail and will appear before the Wagga Wagga Local Court today (19 July).
