Griffith man on bail following allegations two dogs were poisoned several times

A 63-year-old Griffith man has been charged with animal cruelty and firearm offences after a police investigation into alleged dog poisoning.

A NSW Police spokesman informed Region officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District commenced an investigation in September 2023 following several reports of two dogs being allegedly poisoned on several occasions.

Following inquiries, officers from the Griffith Proactive Crime Team executed a search warrant at a home in Griffith about 1:20 pm last Thursday (1 February).

During the search, police located and seized a number of items including an air rifle, air rifle ammunition, and a cleaning kit.

A male was arrested on scene and taken to Griffith Police Station, where he was charged with a number of firearm and animal cruelty offences.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Griffith Local Court on Wednesday 24 April.

Region also contacted police for an update on reports circulating on social media that a man was caught defecating outside a shop on Banna Avenue.

Murrumbidgee Police Inspector Glenn Smith told Triple M Riverina MIA radio the incident allegedly occurred on Friday (2 February) and was captured on Griffith City Council CCTV, footage which was then provided to police.

A NSW Police spokesman has said this was a “mental health” matter and that police would not be making further comment.
