Murrumbidgee Police are searching for a 30-year-old Yenda man who escaped police on foot after crashing his car into an orange orchard following an alleged high-speed pursuit.
At around 10:20 pm on Saturday (16 August), police were conducting proactive patrols along Citrus Road in Griffith when they observed a silver Isuzu D-Max utility driving in a westerly direction along Rifle Range Road at an alleged excessive speed.
Police chased the vehicle and caught up to it along Boorga Road, Lake Wyangan. Police will allege they activated all warning devices and attempted to stop the vehicle; however, it accelerated harshly and failed to stop.
The D-Max continued to drive at an alleged excessive speed, overtaking a vehicle onto the wrong side of the roadway before entering the main township of Lake Wyangan. The vehicle allegedly continued to speed along Boorga Road before turning onto Jones Road at Lake Wyangan.
The car travelled through the intersection, onto Kidman Way, turned off the roadway and collided with an embankment. This caused the vehicle to lose control and strike various orange trees within an orchard.
The driver climbed out of the front passenger seat and fell on both hands onto the ground, in front of officers who recognised him.
The 30-year-old Yenda man allegedly ran away from police across the orange orchard. Officers chased him but lost sight of him. They continued to search the area but couldn’t locate the driver.
Just after midnight on Sunday, Police attended an address in Yenda where a Form of Demand was placed on the registered owner of the vehicle.
Checks conducted on the driver revealed he had never held a driver’s licence in NSW and had committed similar offences within the past five years.
The driver of the vehicle is being sought by police, who allege he is responsible for several unlicensed offences.
