The small township of Yanco has its first library service, after Leeton Shire Council made a deal with new Yanco General Store owner Liz Mason to hold shelves of books that can be borrowed.
Under the arrangement, the store is now hosting a collection that can be borrowed by anyone who has a Riverina Regional Library card.
“We currently have fiction books there, we have children’s books, we have board books, we are trialling what to put there and we have large print, which is very popular there,” Leeton Shire Library supervisor Rachel Cody said.
If you don’t have a library card, you can apply for one at the Yanco store if you have proof you live in the Leeton Shire Council area. Residents can borrow books at the Yanco store and return them to the same place, or to the main Leeton Library in Sycamore Street.
Ms Cody said the project reflected a strong commitment to accessibility, learning and community connection.
“This idea has been in the pipeline for quite some time, so bringing it to life is incredibly rewarding,” she said.
“Having a library presence in Yanco means residents can access books and library services closer to home while strengthening ties between council, local business and the community. It supports learning, literacy and wellbeing, and ensures our services are more inclusive for people who may not be able to travel into Leeton regularly.”
Leeton Library also has a free Home Library Service, which offers monthly delivery of library items directly to a resident’s home. The service includes books, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs and more, with up to 35 items available at a time, and supports community members who may be
isolated, have mobility constraints or prefer home delivery.
For more information about the Yanco library depot, library membership or the Home Library Service, residents are encouraged to contact the Leeton Shire Library on (02) 6953 0945 or visit the council’s website.
