Wagga City Council announced the work for the Duke of Kent Community Building will start in September.

The Duke of Kent Community Building is an $800,000 project that will become the new home to two local clubs and other community groups.

The council accepted the tender offer from Adaptive Interiors for the design and construction of the Duke of Kent Community Building for the lump sum amount of $695,720 in October 2021.

Wagga City Council’s projects associate director Silas Darby said the building will be built on the former site of the Wagga Women’s Bowling Club rooms.

“The site will be cleared to make way for the new facility which will accommodate the Wagga Wagga Veteran and Vintage Motor Club, University of the Third Age members, and other community groups.

At a public auction late last year, the city council sold the Wagga Wagga Veteran and Vintage Motor Club building site at 205 Morgan Street.

The site was sold with a commitment to the tenants to find alternate accommodation and make way for the development of a $180 million multi-story office building and a six-storey carpark.

The associate director projects said the council considered alternative locations for the community building through investigations and user group discussions.

Mr Darby said the discussions led to the council endorsing the construction of a new facility.
