Leeton Shire Council has announced the commencement of works on Stage 2 of the Roxy Community Theatre redevelopment, following receipt of a new injection of $800,000 in federal government funding in July.

The 1930-built art deco structure is being redone to include an enhanced foyer, two cinemas and a performing arts school. After many delays and setbacks, the revamped facility opened in March after the first stage of redevelopments were completed.

Now, works will begin on the second stage, which will deliver a multipurpose theatrette, a fully equipped function kitchen, a gaming/digital development space and management office, and an improved educational capability in the Supper Room. Council says these facilities will increase the venue’s capacity, functionality, versatility and revenue raising potential.

The new theatrette will be equipped with retractable seating, enabling the space to be adapted for a variety of purposes, such as movie screenings, acting workshops, comedy performances, and other community events.

The total project value is estimated at $1.6 million. The Australian Government will contribute 50 per cent of the total cost through Round 2 of the Growing Regions Program, with council funding the remaining amount as approved last financial year.

Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Lead for Arts and Culture Michael Kidd thanked the Australian Government for its investment.

“We are most grateful to the Australian Government for supporting the vision of this historic project. The Stage 2 theatrette will enhance the Roxy’s programming, allowing us to host a wider range of performances, screenings, and community events. It’s a practical addition that will help activate the space year-round and increase community access to the arts.”

At one stage, it looked as if the second stage may not happen, after consistent appeals for federal support fell on deaf ears until January, when it was announced the Albanese Government would step up.

The first stage of redevelopments, completed in March, saw the main auditorium refurbished. There were also upgrades to the stage and curtains, including the replacement of stage piers, installation of a loading dock and replacement of the raked floor with flat flooring. New seating was installed in the dress circle and there was repainting of walls and ceilings and new carpeting, upgraded sound systems, new cinema surround sound and new lighting bars and electronic stage management added.

Project manager Gideon Vos said while some disruptions were likely, council should be able to complete most of the Stage 2 build without interfering with the Roxy operations in the auditorium.

“The project team is working closely with the operations team to limit any interruptions,” he said.

Stage 2 is scheduled for completion by December, with the retractable seating due for delivery in March 2026.
