Two people have been charged in Junee after a police pursuit in which a woman allegedly threw items at police before the driver allegedly rammed the officer’s vehicle.

Just after 1 pm on Sunday (1 March), an officer from Riverina Sector Highway Patrol attempted to stop the driver of a grey Holden Commodore on the Olympic Highway, Bomen.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a police pursuit was initiated.

During the pursuit, a female passenger allegedly threw items from the vehicle towards the pursuing police vehicle.

Upon reaching Albert Street, Junee, the driver of the Commodore sedan allegedly reversed at speed and rammed the police vehicle, triggering all airbags. The vehicle was then driven away.

A short time later, police found the Commodore abandoned in the rail corridor near Junction Street, Junee.

Following inquiries, police attended a house in Percy Street, Junee, where they arrested a 25-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman.

They were both conveyed to Junee Police Station, where the man was charged with using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, failing to stop during a police pursuit and driving dangerously, driving whilst disqualified, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and displaying a misleading number plate. He was also charged over an outstanding warrant.

The woman was charged with intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle – risk to safety and intentionally damaging property.

The man and woman were refused bail and appeared at Wagga Wagga Local Court yesterday (2 March).

The male police officer was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for scans and treatment for upper body injuries.
