Riverina police are urging drivers to take extra care on the roads as we reach the mid-point of the school holidays.
The warning comes after an accident last week saw a 58-year-old woman trapped inside her Mitsubishi station wagon.
The accident happened when a Mitsubishi Pajero 4WD failed to give way at an intersection on Irrigation Way in Whitton, near Leeton, colliding with the woman’s car and flipping it over.
Acting Griffith Police Inspector Brett Jameson said the accident happened just before 6 am on 12 April.
The Pajero was being driven by a 64-year-old woman along Wilga Road, Whitton. She entered the intersection at Irrigation Way, allegedly disregarding the Give Way sign.
The station wagon driver was trapped inside and had to be extricated from her vehicle by the Leeton Rescue Squad VRA, assisted by members of NSW Ambulance, Whitton Rural Fire Service and NSW Police.
She was taken to Griffith Base Hospital for scans but no major injuries were identified and she was later discharged.
Both drivers were breath tested at the scene, returning negative results for alcohol consumption. The Pajero driver who allegedly failed to give way was issued with an infringement notice fine of $387 and lost three demerit points.
Inspector Jameson said the accident underlined the need for people to concentrate while driving on our roads.
He said with school holidays underway it was important to drive safely, stick to the speed limit, not drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, ensure all passengers wore a seatbelt and avoid distractions such as mobile phones.
