The Wagga Wagga CBD was left in shock on Wednesday night (5 June) after the Wagga Dry Cleaners caught fire.
Police and Fire and Rescue were called to the property just after 9 pm to find the fire had engulfed the premises. Onlookers gathered around the building, situated between the Oceanic Takeaway and Saigon Restaurant on Morgan Street, reporting a smell similar to that of an electrical fire.
New Oceanic Takeaway staff member Rebecca Costello saw smoke coming from the building before swiftly ringing triple zero. Upon arrival, Fire and Rescue immediately set a perimeter on Morgan Street between Peter Street and Baylis Street.
Fire and Rescue took just over an hour and a half to extinguish the blaze. Riverina police reported that no one was harmed in the fire.
FRNSW Wagga zone commander Daryl Manson stated that despite being a difficult fire to contain, the work of the RFS and the respect of onlookers meant they were eventually able to control the blaze.
One of the first people on the scene was local Ronnie Alexander, who was walking down Baylis Street after having dinner with her friends at Guzman y Gomez.
Ms Alexander said she first noticed a plastic smell before hearing a rush of sirens.
“All of a sudden, we hear three loud bangs. We thought they were firecrackers because State of Origin was on,” she said.
“A short time later, around three or four firetrucks pulled up and the streets started being blocked off.
“The fire was pretty big and it looked like they had to access the building from the top, which is where most of the flames were coming from.
“It looked quite serious, they had ambulances show up before going into the building. Just from standing on the street, you could see the flames, there was a bright glow that lit up the entire street.”
