It’s been six years in the making but the Wagga Wagga Boat Club has now unveiled the region’s newest waterfront venue with the completion of a deck over Lake Albert.
“It was brought up by one of the directors back in 2016 as a suggestion but financially the club couldn’t afford it so it went on the back burner,” commodore Mick Henderson explains.
“We actually own the land out there under the water so it got reignited in 2020 and we all agreed to utilise that land to give us more space to host events out over the water.”
As a proud river town, Wagga is surprisingly short on venues that showcase the town’s water frontage.
Mick says making the most of the club’s Lake Albert location was a no-brainer.
“It’s a one-of-a-kind location here in Wagga, being out there over the water like it is,” he says with a grin.
“When the lake’s full there’s activity on the lake for everyone – you’ve got the boats and the canoeing and the fishing, it’s a great attraction for everyone.”
The new deck looks spectacular in the sun shaded by a white gazebo and striped umbrellas with lights and oversized Christmas baubles in place for the festive season.
Anna Bolton works on functions at the club and says the new space is already proving a hit with locals after photos began being shared on social media.
“I think it’s just beautiful! I’ve watched it come together from nothing and it’s all just come together and it just looks amazing,” she says.
“We had a Pinot & Picasso painting function and it was great. We’ve already got more people asking about them and we’ve had a hen’s night.”
The plan is to include a bar and the ability to close the deck in for winter. The commodore says it will be a great spot for functions all year round.
“I think it will get used for a lot of weddings, day-to-day functions and corporate events and even just dining out over the lake at lunchtime,” he says.
“The community has been really supportive of it and seeing that we’re trying to move ahead and giving the people somewhere different to dine and be entertained.
“Already just the bookings and the feedback’s obviously been fantastic.”
Mick says the city’s planned expansion to the south and the promise of thousands of new homes around the Lake Albert area were factors in the decision.
“With more and more residents moving out here, it’s a growing population,” he says.
“So it’ll be good when you can cycle down to the lake and drop in for coffee or a frothy and hopefully it’ll be the place to be in the summer.”
