With the school holidays almost upon us, Wagga artists Kim Baker and Lindy Farley will be sharing their skills with budding painters in the old schoolhouse at the Museum of the Riverina.

As well as offering a variety of craft activities, the artists will each be running workshops to give primary-aged painters the chance to get on the brushes and capture some of the region’s birdlife.

Lindy will be giving the kids a taste of colourful abstract painting with acrylics on canvas while Kim’s Little Birdy School Holiday Art Program will introduce the kids to watercolours.

“I’m going to be running two workshops on the Tuesdays [16 and 23 April] and we’re going to be looking at all of the local birdlife around the Botanic Gardens site,” Kim explained.

“We’re going to create our own artworks including some watercolour paintings, collages, and some bookmarks that the kids get to take home.”

Watercolour can be a tricky medium to master but Kim has plenty of experience working with kids and helping them to create something special.

“There are some techniques that I teach kids that you really have to learn to make watercolour work for you,” Kim said.

“I find that the kids are great, and they really do listen and they put into practice what I’ve taught them and they create some wonderful watercolour paintings.”

Kim’s landscape and nature paintings and her design work will be familiar to many art lovers in the Riverina.

Birds feature prominently in her creations, making her a perfect choice for the Museum of the Riverina’s holiday schedule.

“The Museum of the Riverina is focusing all of their program over the holiday on the birdlife in Wagga and they have a bird guide that they’ve supplied to us,” Kim said.

“So we’ll learn about the birds and then we’ll do some watercolours based on the bird species and we’ll have a chance for the kids to choose their favourite bird and they can create their own artworks.”

Lindy Farley is well known for her bright abstract works and teaches regular art classes at the Little Yellow House Gallery and Studio on Tompson Street.

Abstract Bird Painting with Lindy will be on the first Wednesday (17 April) of the holiday and promises to be a colourful experience.

“It’s almost like working in reverse because we actually start by colouring in the canvas and then we negative space out the background to do the bird,” she explained.

“So basically your bird will have all these different colours in it, so it should be fun!”

The MoR Autumn Holiday Programs run from 15 to 26 April and you can find out more on its website.
