Expressions of interest (EOIs) are being invited from local men to join a volunteer community working group that will drive the development of a long-term vision for the Riverina Men’s Health Centre (RMHC) in Wagga Wagga.
Founder of the Murrumbidgee Men’s Group and men’s health advocate Rhys Cummins said the need to support men in the region was clear, and the time to act on the cause was now.
“There is a huge need for more support for men in our community,” Mr Cummins said.
“Men face challenges that are unique to men, and so we are looking to create a safe place for healing and wellness.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of something that will have a positive impact on boys and men for generations to come.”
The topic of a men’s health centre has been on Wagga City Council’s agenda for almost a year following a Wagga Wagga & Surrounds Men’s Leadership Forum in July 2024.
After the forum, which the Wagga Women’s Health Centre organised, the local Men’s Consultative Group launched a petition requesting that a Men’s Wellness Centre be established in Wagga Wagga.
The petition garnered 939 signatures from community members and led to Councillor Richard Foley submitting a notice of motion during an October 2024 council meeting, requesting WWCC to produce a report looking into the possibility of a centre being created.
As recommended by the report in response to Cr Foley’s Riverina Men’s Health Centre notice of motion tabled at the meeting on 12 May, 2025, the council is supporting the EOI process.
The preliminary feedback identified that the project needs to be led and delivered by local men, for local men.
The working group will play a central role in establishing the RMHC, leading strategic planning, shaping the centre’s model of practice, establishing governance structures, and guiding fundraising efforts with an initial commitment of two to three years.
Men with skills to support those tasks, or who have a strong connection to the community and a passion for improving men’s health and wellbeing through a collaborative, sustainable, and locally driven approach, are encouraged to apply.
