An unlicensed driver in an unregistered Holden Viva allegedly fell asleep before flipping and rolling his vehicle on the Mid Western Highway.
On Saturday (6 September), a 29-year-old man left Hay and drove in a northeasterly direction along the highway towards Goolgowi in a gold coloured Holden Viva with an expired ACT registration.
About 85 kilometres out of Hay, the car left the roadway, allegedly causing it to go down a dirt embankment, before being corrected about 250 meters later and going back up the embankment. When the car reached the bitumen
again, the front right wheel buckled, which caused it to flip and roll.
An oncoming driver saw the large cloud of dust and the car spin out of control, so stopped to offer assistance.
The concerned member of the public saw the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, crawl out of the vehicle and try to stand. The good Samaritan immediately called triple zero and remained until emergency services attended.
Police attended and spoke to the driver to obtain their version of events.
Officers will allege the driver advised police that he fell asleep whilst behind the wheel.
Police established that the vehicle was unregistered and the 29-year-old did not hold a driver’s licence and had never held a licence in any state of Australia.
Officers conducted a breath test for alcohol, which returned a negative result.
The driver was issued infringements for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and driving without a licence.
