Almost four years after it first opened in Bolton Park, Twin City Skate has built a reputation as hosting one of the premier roller discos in the country.

What started as four or five people learning to skate under the supervision of owner and instructor Bec Wawszkowicz, has now become a weekly staple of the Wagga calendar with “hundreds” of people flocking to Bolton Park Stadium over any given month.

“We are so happy and proud that we’ve been able to consistently put on and then build, build the discos that we’re doing that consistently give this community opportunities to skate,” Bec said.

“So many people have childhood memories of going to the skate rink in Wagga, and you just see them light up when they come in and they get to relive that with their own kids.

“We remember our early discos, which were during COVID, and they were very few and far between. We had to separate the courts and have 10 people on this court and 10 on the other … if you look back at that, it’s incredible to see.

“Our smallest disco was our very first one, and it was seven people and we’re like, ‘Oh, no’.

“We know things take time to build, and that’s exactly what’s happened and now we have a huge community. By the time we were three months old, as a roller-skating club, we had the largest membership in New South Wales. That was up around 300 people, which is unheard of.”

Twin City Skate is set to host its 200th event this weekend and is inviting people of any ability to join in on the fun.

“One thing we’ve learnt over the last few years, is that we are very bad at predicting these events. We’d love to have the community see the 200th event as a great achievement, not just by us but by every member who has ever come down,” Bec said.

“We want people who visit Twin City Skate to come down and say, ‘I was there, I was part of that!’

“As for the 200th event itself, we don’t want people to be scared that it’s going to be too busy. Bolton Park Stadium is a fantastic venue that offers plenty of space for everyone to enjoy comfortably and at their own pace.

“I’ll be there to help anyone who might need my support, but at the end of the day it’s all about having fun enjoying a huge milestone as a community.”

Twin City Skate’s 200th roller disco will be held at Bolton Park Stadium at 7 pm, Saturday 1 March. Entry will cost $15 with an additional $5 for skate hire.
