Things to do in the Riverina this week (5 to 11 September)

The Riverina is buzzing with plenty of things to see and do, from Cootamundra to Wagga Wagga, Albury, Temora and Wodonga.

Cootamundra’s Festival of Lights is set to bring the whole community out to Parker Street, lighting up the main drag with fairy lights, food vendors, live music and plenty of entertainment.

Temora’s Youth in Aviation day is inviting young people to get a glimpse of the world of flight, either as a career or as a passion. It’s a great way to get up close with pilots and their machines, providing invaluable information.

The Write Around the Murray School program is bringing workshops, talks, author-meets and educational talks to the area for kids who love stories and want to know more about the writing process.

All this and a whole lot more in the area this week, don’t miss out.

Write Around the Murray Schools Program

When: 10 to 12 September
Where: Various locations, mainly the Albury Library Museum, Retro Lane Cafe and Lavington Library
Cost: Free.

Write Around the Murray is bringing lots of events for young readers and writers to stimulate their creativity. Last year, Write Around the Murray offered 30 programs for 2300 students and this year each and every event is free.

Aspiring young writers and avid bookworms can look forward to talks with successful children’s authors, workshops on creating characters, comics, poems, romance, drawing for narrative, how to write mysteries and a special workshop – Journalism 101 with Antoinette Lattouf.

Catering for preschool kids all the way to senior students, don’t miss this chance to boost your kid’s creative skills. Check the website for a full program.

Spring Safe Storytime on the Riverside

When: 10 and 12 September, 10:30 am to 11:30
Where: Riverside Precinct, Johnston Street, Wagga Wagga
Cost: Free | No bookings required.

Head to the Riverside Precinct with your little ones for a free family-centred story-time session with heaps of songs, stories, dance, bubbles and water safety fun.

After the main event, stick around and check out the Agile Library van, where you can browse, borrow, return and make reservations at this library on the go.

It’s a great community event, delivered in partnership with Kids Alive Do the Five! getting kids into water safety as the weather gets warmer.

A Walk through the History of Albury CBD

Local history buffs and curious residents are welcome to join the Albury & District Historical Society for a walk around the Albury CBD.

Attendees will gain insight into the history of the city, from colourful characters who formed the fabric of 19th-century frontier Albury to how it took on its current form. Starting from the Albury Library Museum, this is a great way to engage with local history and understand the place you live on a deeper level.

The Youth in Aviation Expo at Temora Airport is bringing young people together for a day of excitement all about flying.

There will be aerobatics from pilot Matt Hall, more than 50 aviation-related career displays, a WWII fighter full-motion simulator, aircraft flying overhead all day and much more. This is a great chance for young people to get a look into the exciting world of flight, both for hobbyists and those looking for a career in the skies.

Fractured Fairytales: The Story of Red

A whimsical world of fairytales turned on their heads awaits in The Story of Red, a reimagining of a beloved folk tale. This performance retells the story of Little Red Riding Hood through dance and movement, following Red through an enchanted wood, where she meets a cast of bizarre characters, some of whom are hiding something behind a screen of innocence.

With plenty of twists and surprises, this new and exciting version of the fairytale infuses the classic we all know with a fresh feel and a dynamic presentation.

This performance is suitable for all ages.

Spring is finally here and Cootamundra is celebrating with the Wattle Time Festival of Lights. The trees along Parker Street will be lit up as the whole town gets out and about for live music, market stalls, food vendors, entertainment and family fun.

Celebrate the warmer weather, the blooming wattles and the return of outdoor fun on Parker Street.

Award-winning singer Graham Toole has made a career out of singing the songs of the greats onstage, bringing audiences as close to the real thing as possible.
