There’s a lot to get excited for this week in the Riverina, with a little something for everyone.

The Albury Race Club’s Winter Race Day is on from midday on Tuesday, with seven races due to excite, across a full day of fun.

A slice of Riverina history is in the spotlight at the Museum of the Riverina as the strange story of Tom Castro is placed at the centre of a new exhibition. Lose yourself in this mid 19th century story of a butcher who wanted to be a baronet, claiming to be the long-lost heir of a fortune.

This week’s live music schedule is jam-packed, with tribute shows to U2 and Roy Orbison and a classical piano virtuoso coming to the area for a one-night performance of Chopin and Rachmaninov.

Hollows – Not Nature’s Empty Spaces – Art exhibition

When: 15 to 21 August, during normal gallery hours
Where: Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and National Art Glass Gallery, Civic Centre, corner of Baylis and Morrow streets
Cost: Free.

Hollows is an exhibition of work by three artists, the result of a two-year collaboration that explores the conflicting values and ideas that society attaches to the natural environment.

This exhibition asks the viewer whether remaining bushland is an obstacle to progress or a pillar for our society. Each work intends to make the visitor question to what extent nature is a resource or to what degree it should be kept as is.

Deepen ecological knowledge and gain a greater understanding through art at the Wagga Art Gallery.

When: 15 to 21 August, during normal museum hours
Where: Museum of the Riverina, Historic Council Chambers site, corner Baylis and Morrow streets

Tom Castro: The man who never was is a fascinating exhibition at the Museum of the Riverina, telling the fascinating and somewhat vague story of Tom Castro. In the middle of the 19th century, a Wagga butcher named Mr Castro suddenly claimed to be the long-lost heir to a significant fortune. His claim, whether spurious or not, set into motion an important case of disputed identity, as Mr Castro sought wealth. The story of the butcher who would be a baronet is one of the most bizarre stories from the Riverina and it’s one worth learning.

This story, nearly two centuries old, has been brought to life by the Museum of the Riverina.
