Multiple Days

Tom Castro: The man who never was

When: 12 to 18 June, during normal museum hours
Where: Museum of the Riverina, Historic Council Chambers site, corner Baylis and Morrow streets

Tom Castro: The man who never was is a fascinating exhibition at the Museum of the Riverina, telling the fascinating and somewhat vague story of Tom Castro. In the middle of the 19th century, a Wagga butcher named Castro suddenly claimed to be the long-lost heir to a significant fortune. His claim, whether spurious or not, set in motion an important case of disputed identity, as Mr Castro sought wealth. The story of the butcher who would be a baronet is one of the most bizarre stories from the Riverina and it’s one worth learning about.

This story, nearly 200 years old, has been brought to life by the Museum of the Riverina.
