There’s a whole lot to see and do in the Riverina this week, with plenty of live music, Carols by Candlelight, circus performances, parties, exhibitions and more.
Wagga RSL holds its Christmas Party on the Green, bringing performances, live entertainment, great food, drinks and of course, fireworks, to celebrate the Christmas season.
There are heaps of live music events across the region, with Carols by Candlelight in Griffith, a Christmas show with plenty of opera, Broadway and musical hits in Albury and Christmas with the Riverina Conservatorium in Wagga.

Our Backyard by Vicki Luke – Exhibition at the Library
When: 12 December to 18 December, 10 am to 6 pm weekdays and 10 am to 3 pm weekends
Where: Playspace Gallery, Hyphen Wodonga Library Gallery, 126 Hovell Street, Wodonga
Cost: Free.
Local artist Vicki Luke has collaborated with students from Wodonga Primary School to create this new exhibition by creating a large-scale mixed media work on paper, exploring the changing look and feel of the local environment.
During term two this year, a group of students visited Hyphen for an art session with Luke, examining insects, birds and local wildlife from their own backyards to create their art.
Our Backyard aims to awaken a sense of wonder in the viewers for the natural beauty that may be just within the perimeters of the boundary fence. Visitors are also encouraged to create their own art when they visit the gallery’s play space.

Wagga RSL Christmas Party on the Greens
When: 12 December, 5:30 pm to midnight
Where: Wagga RSL Club, Dobbs Street, Wagga Wagga
Cost: Free.
Wagga RSL is hosting a Christmas celebration for the history books.
Set to be the biggest community celebration of the year, the RSL’s Christmas party will feature live entertainment from Deja Groove, Andy Owen and Second Verse, as well as plenty of local food vendors serving great food.
There will be lots of entertainment, with amusements throughout the night, dazzling performances, face painting, popcorn, fairy floss, festive crafts and a visit from Santa.
The night will also include a fireworks display at 9 pm but that doesn’t mean an end to the fun because once the fantasy festivities are over, an 18+ party continues in the Sports Bar with live music until 1 am.

Christmas with the Con – Riverina Conservatorium of Music
When: 13 December, 7 pm to 9 pm
Where: Riverside Precinct Stage, Johnston Street, Wagga Wagga
Cost: Free.
The Riverina Conservatorium of Music presents the fourth annual Christmas with the Con, a free concert of classical, traditional and contemporary Christmas music performed by the Riverina Conservatorium Orchestra, Simmons Street Big Band, Combined Concert Bands, Mass Choirs, instrumental ensembles and soloists.
More than 220 professional and aspiring musicians will perform a fantastic concert perfect for all ages and the night will finish off with a fireworks display over the Murrumbidgee. Listeners are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy the evening.

Circus Cubed – Circus performance at The Cube Courtyard

Get ready for a day of flips, tricks and fun as the Cube Courtyard hosts the Flying Fruit Fly Circus.
There will be three amazing performances, with young acrobats flying and flipping through the air, doing incredible routines and showcasing their talent. Each performance will be amazing but the fun doesn’t stop there. Once each show is done, kids and grown-ups are welcome to try some tricks themselves in circus workshops. Trainers will guide attendees through safe, hands-on activities.
Bring a picnic blanket, friends and family and enjoy a day out at the courtyard.

Jade Hurley Christmas Special

Jade Hurley is a legend in the Australian rock ‘n’ roll scene and his performing history goes back to 1957, when he formed his first band, the Rockin’ Rebels. His records have earned gold, platinum and double platinum and he earned an OAM in recognition of his contribution and hard work in entertainment, especially his tireless performances of country rock across Australia.
Hurley has performed alongside Johnny Cash, who had this to say about the performer: “If I wasn’t who I am, I would find it very hard to follow him on any stage anywhere in the world … he’s one hell of a showman and entertainer this Aussie … and he can sure play that damn piano.”

Featuring music from musical theatre, Broadway and opera, including beloved classics such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Carmen, La Traviata, Madam Butterfly, Westside Story, Cats, Chicago, Andrea Bocelli, Leonard Cohen and more, this Christmas show is set to be a real demonstration of musical talent.
Five Australian performers will take to the stage to bring these musicians to life, including Tania de Jong AM (soprano), Rebecca Bode (soprano), Jon Bode (tenor), Jonathan Morton (baritone) and pianist Joyce Chahine.

Carols by Candlelight

This Sunday, Griffith Community Gardens becomes the scene of Christmas cheer with Carols by Candlelight. Everyone is welcome to come celebrate the festive season with live performances, a visit from Santa, fireworks from 9:30 pm and plenty of food and drinks from locals.
Pota Pasta, Tornado Potatoes, Roadies Donuts, Chera Pattiserie, Mrs Whippy and Peeches Coffee will be there on the night, along with heaps of other vendors. Don’t miss out!

To celebrate 250 years of one of England’s most towering literary figures Jane Austen, the Riverina Readers Festival is hosting a special celebration, with period outfits, cakes and iced tea, games and era-appropriate entertainment.
The CSU Riverina Playhouse welcomes you and your fellow Austen enthusiasts to enjoy each other’s company in the parlour before a special screening of the much-loved 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. There will also be special editions of Austen’s works on sale, thanks to Gateway Bookshop, Wagga Wagga.
Prizes are on offer for the best-dressed Austen-esque outfit.
