A teenage learner driver will face court after allegedly performing a U-turn in front of police and leading officers on a short pursuit through bushland near Darlington Point before the vehicle was later found parked at a nearby home.
At about 2:48 pm on Sunday (31 May), police were patrolling the entrance of Murrumbidgee National Park off King Street at Darlington Point when they drove down a dirt track near the park entrance.
Officers observed a white ute travelling towards them, before it allegedly suddenly stopped, performed a U-turn and accelerated away further into the national park.
Police activated lights and sirens and a short pursuit was commenced. The pursuit was terminated shortly after due to the ute’s alleged erratic and unsafe driving.
A short time later, police attended the address of the registered owner of the vehicle, where they allegedly located the same white ute parked in the driveway.
Police spoke with a woman at the home before the registered owner of the ute – a 17-year-old male – came to the door. Officers then issued a formal demand, in the presence of his mother, seeking details of who had been driving the vehicle earlier.
Police have established the teenager was the driver at the time of the pursuit. He is the holder of a learner driver’s licence.
A Future Court Attendance Notice will be issued for the alleged offences of police pursuit and driving as a learner unaccompanied.
