The Riverina’s young people will soon be able to explore the Museum of the Riverina after dark for the first time.

As part of Wagga Wagga City Council’s upcoming school holiday program, Museum After Dark invites children and teenagers to the Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site for an evening event following the events of Spring Jam.

The event will feature a host of retro arcade games, Nintendo Switch tournaments, movie showings, sensory-safe spaces, dinner and a DJ.

Council’s Youth and Community Development Officer Mel Fattore said the event idea was based on feedback from young people about the provision of safe, night-time alcohol and drug-free activities for youth audiences.

“We have heard from young people that they want to see more free, alcohol and drug-free, safe and inclusive events targeted towards 12- to 18-year-olds in the school holidays,” Ms Fattore said.

“This free event is open to all high school aged people and will be held at the Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site on Wiradjuri/Wiradyuri Country, kicking off at 5 pm after the Spring Jam Children’s Festival.”

Museum Education and Public Programs Officer Angus Cawdell-Smith is keen to see young people experience the museum site in a new light.

“One of our key goals at the Museum of the Riverina is to be a place for everyone in our community and to use our spaces in new and creative ways,” Mr Cawdell-Smith said.

“We have spent a lot of time and effort into creating a safe space for young people to enjoy different activities. Everything on the night will either be free or low cost.”

Mr Cawdell-Smith said it was really exciting to offer families the opportunity to take part in something that was free these school holidays when a lot of people were doing it tough.

“We hope that they have a great time doing what’s planned for the night, but we also hope that they have a little bit of a look at displays, and maybe it’ll spark a little bit of curiosity.

“The Museum After Dark program is an excellent opportunity to invite young people to the museum for a night of retro fun.”

Museum After Dark is made possible with funding from the Office of Regional Youth as part of its Spring 2024 Holiday Break Half-Yearly Grant Program.

Museum After Dark will be held from 5 to 8 pm on Saturday 28 September.
