Wagga RSL Club will have a new outdoor deck, new and larger outdoor gaming, an alfresco restaurant extension and a two-storey “kids club” following upcoming renovations.
CEO Andrew Bell said the “exciting” additions were only fitting, given how the club roared back into trade following COVID-19-induced lockdowns.
“Winston Churchill said, ‘Never waste a crisis’. Well, we haven’t,” he said.
Mr Bell said it was right to divert some of its good fortune into the community and also into improving the club experience.
“A town’s RSL should be a leader, a pillar of the community and a good neighbour,” he said.
True to that philosophy the club has been pouring funding into its local grants program and is now turning its eye to enhancing its dining, gaming and family offerings.
Teasers are already appearing around the club to pique interest, but according to Curtin Architects Director Greg Taylor, they don’t do the plans justice.
“For the new outdoor deck, we’re looking at a very open design that’s light and airy,” he said.
“The roof will allow in plenty of sunlight and there will be lots of greenery and white timber framing for a fresh, modern look.
“People will love dining there.”
A similar aesthetic will be extended to the al fresco dining space, an extension of the club’s existing restaurant.
Interior metal frames, more greenery and perimeter landscaping will characterise the new outdoor gaming area.
But it’s arguably the new “kids club” that will steal the show.
“In essence it’s a two-storey glass box,” Mr Taylor said.
“It incorporates a massive climbing frame and a sunken ball pit in another section.
“I wanted to create a bit of wow factor on a side of the building that currently hasn’t got much going for it.
“I haven’t done anything like this before.”
Heat won’t be an issue, as the kids club will be positioned facing south and will sport interior screening.
Mr Bell said it would transform a less attractive and largely overlooked section of the club into a lively and much-loved part of the offering.
“It’s going to be manned, so parents can relax and enjoy their time at the club while their kids play safely inside.”
Construction on the project will start early next year and is expected to take about two years.
Mr Bell said the renovations would be staged to minimise disruptions for clientele, and any minor inconveniences would be well worth it.
“These additions will really lift and invigorate the club,” he said.
“The team and I are very much looking forward to improving our facilities for members and the wider community.”
